Years and years ago, in the very early days of Main Street U.S.A., there was a literal connection between the Plaza Restaurant, and the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor, immediately next door. From the day the Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971, up to an unknown date, there was an archway which connected the two spaces. It's a neat little piece of Magic Kingdom history that very few people seem to know about. The only evidence of the connection, is the elaborate molding that still exists around the space where the opening was once located.
The Plaza Ice Cream Parlor
The Plaza Restaurant
This first photo, although blurry, comes from an old Walt Disney World Pictorial Souvenir book. If you look carefully beyond the ice cream cones, you can make out an opening on the right. That's the arch that connects to the restaurant on the other side. The opening in the middle of the photo is the exit door, which still exists.
This next photo is taken from the inside of the Plaza Restaurant. In it, you can see the ornate molding above the section of wall which marks the spot where you could travel between the two
establishments. The two paintings are flanked by vertical pillars, the left pillar partly concealed by a service area wall.
This next photo shows the current wall inside the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor on the left hand side of the shop, and clearly shows evidence that there was an opening here. If you look to both the left and right of the teal panels, you'll see some beautiful woodwork at the tops of the pillars. In this photo, the woodwork on the left pillar is partly obscured by the air curtain machine above the door.
This little piece of Magic Kingdom history, just adds to the mystique of Main Street U.S.A. in those early years of the park.
